Chag Chanukkah Sameach!!!Embracing Chanukkah: Reconnecting with Our Judeo-Christian RootsBy Enedina GuerreroAs Christians we should explore the Jewish roots of our faith to obtain a deeper understanding and connection to our beliefs. One such significant Jewish tradition is Chanukkah, a festival that not only commemorates a historical victory but also enriches our Judeo-Christian heritage. Here’s why Chanukkah is important for Christians to commemorate and reflect upon:Historical ContextAfter Alexander the Great’s empire expanded, his generals divided his territories. Ptolemy took control of Egypt and Israel, while Seleucus reigned over the east, including Syria. During Ptolemy's rule, significant cultural exchanges occurred, including the translation of the Hebrew Bible into Greek, known as the Septuagint. This act, although politically motivated, made the Jewish scriptures accessible to the Hellenistic world.The Hellenistic ChallengeThe cultural and religious imposition by the Seleucid Empire, particularly under Antiochus IV Epiphanes, threatened the very fabric of Jewish identity. His regime went so far as to desecrate the Holy Temple in Jerusalem by installing a statue of Zeus and sacrificing pigs on the altar. This was a profound violation of Jewish law and an affront to their spiritual practices.The Maccabean RevoltIn response, the Hasmoneans, a priestly family led by Mattathias and later his son Judah Maccabee, initiated a revolt. Their struggle was less about national independence and more about religious freedom. The prohibition of Sabbath observances, festivals, and circumcision exemplified the severe oppression against the Jewish faith practices. The rebellion was a stand against the forced Hellenization and the erasure of Jewish customs.Significance of the MiracleChanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple after the Jewish victory.  Although we know this Jewish holiday traditionally focused on the miracle of the oil, where a single day’s supply lasted eight days, symbolizing divine intervention and renewal. The real miracles took place when a band of pious Jews fought in guerrilla type warfare against a trained and experienced Greek army. We don’t have actual numbers, but it’s estimated that approximately 12,000 Jews defeated the well-armed Greek army of up to 40,000 men.  The “Court of the Hasmoneans” established an annual feast of eight days to commemorate the miracles which transpired during the war with the Greeks. This feast came to be called “Chanukkah,” dedication, because it was originally celebrated to rededicate the altar which the Greeks profaned with unclean sacrifices. Although many feast days to commemorate various triumphs of the Maccabees were in vogue at that time, only Chanukah with its lights and singing of praise continued to be celebrated throughout the years and was sanctioned by the Hasmonean court highlighting themes of faith, resilience, and the light of truth triumphing over the darkness of tyranny.Relevance to ChristiansFor Christians, commemorating Chanukkah serves as a reminder of the shared heritage with Judaism. It acknowledges the common values of faith and perseverance in the face of adversity. Moreover, understanding the Jewishness of Jesus enriches the Christian faith, as Jesus himself observed these traditions in Jerusalem as we see in John 10:22. Chanukkah's themes resonate with the Christian narrative of hope, miracles, and the fight for spiritual integrity.In embracing Chanukkah, Christians today can cultivate a deeper appreciation of their faith's roots, fostering a spirit of unity and mutual respect between two intertwined traditions.
